Faculty Buy-In

I would like to have more computational hours each month. What can I do?

In addition to temporary increases which the ARCC can often support, we do have a way where you can get additional monthly increases! Faculty may contribute financially to help the ARCC extend Stokes' computational capacity. Faculty that contribute the equivalent of the costs of a compute node will have their monthly allocation increased by 1,440 times the number of cores their contributions could add to the system. This is nearly three times the DPH such purchased resources would add to the system (3 times 5 days per week, 24 hours per day, 4 weeks per month). For example, if a faculty member contributed the equivalent of two 32-core compute nodes, their monthly DPH would be:

5*24*4 * 3 * 2*32+ 80,000 = 172,160

So instead of only the base 80,000 DPH all faculty receive, the faculty and his/her group would receive a total of 172,160 DPH. It's like receiving time for purchasing three nodes with a cost of only one!

For proposal planning purposes, a typical chassis (which holds four nodes) in Stokes costs around $36,000 and the ARCC can get a quote for you if needed. During certain times of the year, the ARCC can support purchases of individual nodes (around $9,000 each).
